First of several posts on the Art and Art Direction of The Levi's Jeans Ad Campaign.

Jack Tom and I have given Chris Blum, art director of the Levi's Jean ads between 1967-1984, a few questions about how the Electric Jeans Ad was done and how itcame to be as iconic as I remember them.
We are starting off with The Electric Jean Ad illustrated by Alan Aldridge who also did The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics.

JC: Why was Alan Aldridge chosen for this ad? How were the artists chosen for these ads?
CB: Aldridge was very hot at the time he had just done The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics. which as you know is now a classic. The artists were chosen in regards to their technique and how that technique or style would lend itself to the concept and also the current pop culture trends that were moving through time and space at that given time i.e. The Beatles were very hot at that time

JC: Who's concept was this? What was the thinking behind the works?
CB: Mike and I usually came up with these concepts together, the thinking was that we had to portray Levi's as being extremely colorful with extreme patterns once again this was the style of the time. Depending on what we felt was going on at the time ,in this case there was a lot of psychedelic influence in street art and music - although it could have been Music, Politics, The Anti War movement, the Youth movement, the Womens movement, a Film, the Entertainment world,the Fashion world, or just something Mike and I felt was relevant or funny

JC: How much art direction?
CB: A lot of art direction. I would usually do a pretty tight drawing before giving it to an artist. I would say that there was more subject matter direction than art direction.

JC: Was the artist given free reign?
CB: There was always a working image done by myself, sometimes very loose ( on a napkin) or sometimes very tight, although I only worked in black and white never color. There were always work in progress images going back and forth between myself and the artist

JC: Can you give me the round park price for the artwork alone? Was this a set budget that all the artists were paid? Was this a buyout or was the artist able to retain their rights to their artwork? Was the artwork returned?
CB: I don't recall the budgets but they were very good compared to editorial art budgets which would be the closest thing to this kind of a job because this type of art was not being done in advertisements. Album covers ( which paid very little ) and editorial art were the closest categories. The art was purchased as buyout and Levi's kept all the originals some of which are still hanging in their corporate offices today

JC: Did the client have his/her hands in the production of either the concept or the artwork? Was there a committee?
CB: In those years Levi's was the "Dream" client. At one point they said to Mike and I " We have know idea what you guys are doing but just keep doing because it is really working" As the company got larger and larger and went from being privately owned to the stock exchange and went Global the " Brain Police" started getting in the way and the dream client was over.

JC: Was this animated for other ads?
CB: Yes this image was animated and the style sheets although simplified for animation purposes were from the original Aldridge art. The animation was done by Linda Taylor who should always be given credit as the person who helped create the early Levi's animation look and style

JT: Was it true that the original art was held up at the US Custom for some reason?
CB: Yes the painting was done in London where Aldridge lived and maybe "THE MAN" had their eyes on him or maybe it was a normal customs routine The story was that there was a lot of Heroin smuggling being done by tinting the white heroin with pigment and laying down an adhesive and then dry/air brushing the powder onto the wet adhesive so that it looked like paint. I believe that the air brush they were using was a micro sand blaster that was used to clean old jewelry and thusly it could blow dry pigment. I finally received the painting after they kept it for 3 weeks and there were little chip marks all over it where they chipped off flakes of paint to be tested. I had to have a lot of repair work done. I think I hired a photo retoucher to fix it

I first met Chris Blum in 1971 while I was apprenticing at Point Studio in San Francisco. He became a big influence when I launched a career as an illustrator and, in time, I was privileged to work on his advertising accounts. While in college I was keenly aware of his inspired art direction when Levi's underwent the re-branding of its corporate image. With creative partner Mike Koelker at the Honig Cooper and Harrington ad agency, Chris became the creative force behind memorable Levi's animated commercials and posters (the next best thing to Fillmore West and Avalon Ballroom rock posters of the time).

I lost touch with Chris when I moved to New York in 1977. Up to that point Levi Strauss company had produced a limited edition book titled, "This Is A Pair of Levi's Jeans: The Official History of the Levi's Brand" (beautifully designed by Jennifer Morla, the volume is no longer available). CA magazine had also featured an article titled "Chris & Mike & Levi" written by Dugald Stermer. It was during a phone call with Chris in 2002 that I proposed a new Levi's book project extending the company's advertising history. He liked the idea and offered full support.

The working title for my proposed book is "Levi's Posters: A Collection of Art from 1967 to 1984." It would feature a number of animated commercials and over 80 posters, several produced for the Olympic Games the year the United States boycotted the event in Russia. They were printed but never distributed and consequently remain unseen to this day by the general public.

My book also differs from the limited edition in that it would feature posters created between 1967-1984 when America was going through enormous change brought about by the anti-Vietnam War movement, race relations, women's rights, the Beatles and the psychedelic drug culture. Levi's was targeting its product line to a younger/hipper generation and their posters showcased the work of some of the top airbrush and traditional illustrators of the time: Charlie White III, Dave Willardson, John Van Hamersveld, Alan Aldridge, Peter Lloyd, Doug Johnson, Kelley-Mouse (Alton Kelly and Stanley Miller), Dugald Stermer, Bruce Wolfe, Nick Sidjakov, Paul Davis, Kinuko Craft, Lawrence Duke, Tony Naganuma, Ignacio Gomez, and Victor Moscoso to name a few. The posters Chris Blum and Mike Koelker produced reflected the changing times brilliantly and Levi's jeans became the counterculture garb of choice eventually attaining iconic stature.

"Levi's Posters: A Collection of Art from 1967 to 1984" did not find a publisher although a number expressed interest. Chris and I still believe Levi's advertizing is a great idea for a book. For now, I am happy to share a few images on this wonderful site. Hopefully they will rekindle great memories and perhaps even find that elusive and interested publisher. Spread the word and thank you.

It's always a pleasure to check out the Pop Art worx of Betsy Friedman @ betsyfriedman.com.
As a fan, I have to say she is delivering quite a punch! Her work seems to be going more toward abstract expressionism but retaining recognizable imagery of the Baby Boomer World.
Friedman's worx are vibrant with color backgrounds contrasted with bold gray brush stroked silhouetted furniture of the Jet Age. Sometimes these familiar objects are collaged bits and pieces forming a compositional puzzle that brings you deeper into the canvas.
Betsy Friedman will definitely leave you with a lasting Expression!

Not only was Don Ivan Punchatz a great craftsman, his concepts were very compelling. Art directors were guaranteed the best of both worlds when they hired him. Had he been born 50 years earlier, he would have been quite at home with the Surrealists and it's obvious he was influenced by Magritte and Dali. As a student I really admired his work and all these years later it still resonates.

"The Seven Deadly Sins" by Jack Tom

Showcased above are "The Seven Deadly Sins" done in 2011 including a promotional self-standing display piece created for the series, a confessional booth with doors that open to an inside pocket. Envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth and wrath are illustrated by Jack Tom.

I first met Jack Tom around 1980 at McCall's magazine, he was art directing the monthly "Right Now" section. We were both West Coast transplants, he a native of San Francisco and I an Art Center/LA graduate. We had similar tastes (underground comics, Disney, Fillmore posters) and clicked immediately. I loved getting assignments from Jack because they always came on a silver platter. As an illustrator himself, he always provided great sketches to work from but never expected me to follow them exactly.

After McCall's Jack worked as a senior designer under the legendary Lou Dorfsman at CBS and later started Jack Tom Design in 1985. Literally a "Jack of all trades," not only is he an accomplished illustrator but produced a broad range of graphic designs for print and the Web including logos, identity systems, packaging, book designs, annual reports, promotional and marketing materials. Jack Tom teaches graphic design, typography and illustration as an adjunct professor at the University of New Haven and a visiting professor at University of Syracuse, New York University and Fairfield University.

Back in the mid to late 70's I fell in love with the wondrous worx of Chris McEwan! I was back then going to many Star Trek and Comic Book conventions where I happened to see his art in a fantasy book. It mentioned a book titled Daffy Gaggles and showed images of a world like Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland but with totally spriteful characters.
Never found the book here in the states nor his worx till just recently on Cloud 109 Blog. The blog had Chris McEwan's website @ lawsonmcewan.com.
Boy did that make my day!

I do remember the incredible worx of LA's finest Ignacio Gomez @ ignaciogomez.com!

He was one of the Airbrush Giants like Dave Willardson and Charles White III of the mid to late 70's! He gave me inspiration to be an illustrator.

I mostly recall his famous poster for the movie Zoot Suit. That iconic figure of James Olmos which every Chicano knows so well. It stood for us and Ignacio illustrated it with pride.

Along with George Hardie at NTA Studios in England, Bush Hollyhead has done, during the mid 70's to present, some of the best design illustrations I have ever seen.
Hollyhead's artworx are always in a state of flux or constant dynamic motion. Working in various mediums one can see a storybook quality or a hard line graphic poster look. He is quick as a fox with intellectual British humor and a visual design sense much like Mick Haggerty's early artworx.

I wish to thank my illustrator friend Leo Pando, who is fast becoming my Ghost Blogger, for sending me some of the best illustrations by Bush Hollyhead and many others. Bush Hollyhead is rare and hard to find. Believe me I have searched the internet high and low for any and all of his worx.

I was sent (by illustrator Leo Pando) six magnificent pieces of artistic magic illustrated by Pierre Clemént and the name of his book to hunt down on the internet.
Pierre has an intricate line style much like fantasy artist Winsor McKay (Little Nemo) and comic strip artist George McManus (Bringing Up Father). Very architectural and with flights of fancy freedom!

Designer Mike Salisbury sent me these nice jpegs of the 1974 Rolling Stone Magazine cover and artwork by Peter Palombi! That newsprint does no justice to the art!

Profile pic on Mike Salisbury's Facebook wall (art director for Rolling Stone Magazine in the 70's) in which the cover concept came from. Mike wanted to do a piece on all things jeans, so he got Tom Wolfe to write it and Tina Turner to pose in an entire denim outfit he had made for her by what he remembers to be Nudie Jeans.
[BTW- Nudies was the "Rodeo Tailor" who amongst credits for creating the flashy country western look also did the Flying Burrito Bros. outfits with the pills and M.J. plants.-MS]

ROBERT BERMAN GALLERY presents PAID TO PLAY – an overview of the oft overlooked Southern California artists rooted in illustration, commissioned to create imagery for record albums, magazines, advertisements, et al. A genre dirtily linked to commercialism but nonetheless full of innovation, technique, artistic expression and speed.

“Fueled by a combination of intense demand, sleepless nights and brutal competition, the four men at the center of LA’s airbrush market – Dave Willardson, Charles E. White III, Peter Palombi and Peter Lloyd – embarked on careers that produced iconic work for Playboy, Levi’s, the Rolling Stones, along with major studio films such as American Graffiti and Tron.” - Overspray: Riding High with the Kings of California Airbrush Art. And the wrangler of these men was Mike Salisbury – the art director of West magazine, the Sunday supplement of the Los Angeles Times, beginning in the late 60s – who was for illustrators what Ferus Gallery was for beat artists – a platform to project Los Angeles cool to the world at large.

Though the visuals defined a generation, most west coast illustrators never landed the fine art jump with the aplomb of their east coast contemporaries like James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann and Andy Warhol. But perhaps the most convincing testament to the relevance of a movement largely branded as irrelevant would be the 1969 West magazine cover painted by Ed Ruscha, commissioned by Mike Salisbury, which fetched $578,500 at auction in 2009.

Included in the exhibition are works by Willardson, White, Palombi, Lloyd, George Petty, Bob Zoell, Mick Haggerty, Lou Beach, John Van Hamersveld, Ben Talbert, John Altoon, Jim Heimann, Mark Ryden, Dennis Mukai and others.
PAID TO PLAY is part of Pacific Standard Time. This unprecedented collaboration, initiated by the Getty, brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene.

Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 – 1980
Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together for six months beginning in October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world. Each institution will make its own contribution to this grand-scale story of artistic innovation and social change, told through a multitude of simultaneous exhibitions and programs. Back in 1975 I was going through a few of the reference magazines we had at the back of the Sketchpad Studio and lots of artists' worx would pop up. I was mesmerized by the worx of Leo Pando who had a distinctive black and white (sometimeswith color) stippling style very much like illustrator Alex Murawski and fantasy/sci-fi artist Virgil Finlay.

I was quite impressed by Leo's worx though me having a total disgust of stippling, which I would avoid those assignments like the plague. He made it look easy but beautifully. As I went through the piles of magazines which were walls of shelves of everything from Playboys to Penthouses to Sesame Streets to Times to even Screw Magazines I started to create my own tearsheet files of certain illustrators like Peter Lloyd, Charles White III, Kim Whitesides, Mick Haggerty, etc., etc., and amongst these was Leo Pando.

Leo Pando is a True Master of Illustration and one of those who deserves more recognition than from just those who know him and his worx. If he's not in the Society of Illustrator's Hall of Fame then they should construct one and induct him in.

I put out a "Call for Leo Pando!" to see if anyone would give me any direction as to his whereabouts and his doings or undoings. I was so pleasantly surprised by the email I got from Jack Tom who knew him. In fact, Jack contacted Leo Pando and then Leo Pando contacted me. The miracle of the Internet! After a few emails back and forth I have received quite a file of jpegs of his best works. I compiled 10 simple questions like an interview for him to explain his life in a nutshell.

The Q & A

Me: I was really into Comic Books back in the 70’s and your work looks like it has had the same kind of inspiration. What made you decide to become an artist as a kid?

Leo Pando: I was very much into comic books growing up in the fifties, superhero and western titles mostly. Sam Savitt Dell cover painter was an childhood hero. I published a cover story on him in issue #4 of Illustration magazine. He started at the end of the golden age of illustration in men’s action magazines and illustrated dozens of horse related books. In later years he was occupied by gallery work, prints, posters and private commissions for such blue bloods as the Gettys of San Simeon.
Comic book illustrators I still admire include Gil Kane, Carmine Infantino, Ramona Fraddon, Dick Sprang, Joe Kubert, Jim Steranko, Steve Ditko, Brian Bolland and Neal Adams. Jack Kirby is my favorite. I am in awe of Moebius and Albert Uderzo. I was crazy about MAD magazine especially the work of Kelly Freas, Wally Wood, Jack Davis, and Will Elder. I was also lucky to grow up when newspaper strips were still magnificent: “Prince Valiant,” “Pogo,” “Lil’ Abner,” “Buz Sawyer,” and “Steve Canyon.” I loved “Flash Gordon,” “Tarzan” and “Little Nemo.” Then there were the Disney, Warner Brothers and Fleischer animated cartoons. I was even into political cartoonists: Bill Mauldin, Paul Conrad, Herblock, and Karl Hubenthal. Earning a living in a related field became an early dream.

Me: What school(s) did you go to that helped you venture into the field of Graphic Design?

Leo Pando: I have a BFA in art history and criticism from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. As I had no desire to teach and wanted to develop studio skills, I went to Art Center College of Design in LA (Beverly Hills at the time) and majored in Illustration.

Me: Did your cultural background play an important part in your development? If so, how?

Leo Pando: My Latino background didn’t play a direct part in my development as an illustrator. Although I was brought up in a bilingual home, as with most baby boomers I absorbed current fads. My earliest memories are of B-western movies with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and the Lone Ranger. In 2007 I finished a biography on Rogers’ palomino Trigger for McFarland Publishing and got to interview his trainer. Rock and roll, the Beatles, Stones and Bob Dylan hit like a ton of bricks. I was very into sci-fi television and loved “The Twilight Zone” and “Star Trek.” Same for movies, especially loved special effects and greatly admire stop motion genius Ray Harryhausen.

Me: I myself had a hard time doing stippling. I would do anything not to do it. You seem to embrace it and do it well. How did you keep from plucking your eyes out?

Leo Pando: I was always being asked about my stippling technique. The a trick was, less is more. Give the impression there’s lots but only produce what’s absolutely necessary for effect. Even Virgil Finlay eventually worked the same way. I also would start with a large point that produced big dots, then made a second pass with a smaller point to smooth out a gradation, that really sped things up and didn’t make the pattern so monotonous. I always tried to work to size. With small spot illustrations, working twice up didn’t really matter. Never work under size as blowing up stipple patterns does not produce good results. It is a limited technique with respect to reproduction and I stopped using it.

Me: Lots of my friends as well as myself are collectors, packrats, hoarders, etc., do you collect things for inspiration? What kinds?

Leo Pando: Like most visually oriented people, I’ve always been a collector and pack rat: comic books, LPs/CDs, Japanese toy robots, art books, beer cans, ephemera, etc. While there are certain things I cherish and do not regret owning, I went over board. You don’t own things, they own you. As I’m retired and don’t have children, downsizing is a major preoccupation. Ebay has been a blessing of sorts, what I couldn’t sell was dumped or donated.

Me: I use to love to play music in the 80’s while I worked but now I find myself watching old movies for ideas. Does music, movies or TV play any part in the creation of your work?

Leo Pando: Music, movies and television played an indirect part in the creation of my work having more to do with attitude than style. While working I usually had a radio or television on for company. The life of a freelance illustrator can be isolating and one works by rote part of the time.

Me: You mentioned that you are retired, when did this event come about? Hopefully not for any bad reasons?

Leo Pando: I retired in 2010. Prior to that I held positions as a graphic designer at an ivy league college and a small town newspaper. Prior to that I even worked as assistant manager of an Arabian horse breeding facility. I’d long since given up a career as a full time freelance illustrator. Between clip art services, the computer and ever growing competition from younger illustrators working for rates that hadn’t changed since the 80s, the writing was pretty much on the wall.
The trick with retirement is to make “to do” lists and not watch the flat screen all day. I like to read, watch HD letter boxed movies, surf the internet, ride my bike, ebay, call my sisters and friends. I live on seven acres in the country and maintaining the place requires effort. My wife has her own therapy/counselling practice and I’m in charge of household chores.
Beyond writing books on equine celebrities, I have consulted on and story boarded documentary films for Canadian television.

Me: Who played a major part in your decision to become an illustrator?

Leo Pando: I always drew at an above average level in public schools. I took journalism classes and was art director for my high school annual. It was obvious early on I would pursue a career in the visual arts. My parents always encouraged me.

Me: Who did you admire in the early part of your career?

Leo Pando: My taste in illustrators is very eclectic, from Ralph Steadman to Frank Frazetta to Gary Kelly. Those who were a direct stylistic influence when I graduated from Art Center in 1975 included Roger Hane, Wilson McClean, Kim Whitesides, Gary Overacre, Roy Carruthers, and Peter Lloyd. Later in New York as my work became more stylized, I was very affected by Rick Griffin, Rand Holmes, Alex Murawski, Al Hirsfeld, Bob Zoell, Mick Haggerty, Dave Calver, George Hardie, Bob Lawrie, Bush Hollyhead, Ever Meulen, Pierre Clement. After I learned computer software I was very aware of Nancy Stahl and Steven Lyons.

Me: Is there anything, good or bad, you would like to say about the Graphic Design World?

Leo Pando: I’m impressed by any illustrator who can sustain a career over 30-40 years, especially in this economy. A graphic designer isn’t as vulnerable to trends but still most I know are struggling. Editorial work is sparse and advertising agencies seem to favor photography.
Computers were a mixed blessing. I love them but they came with a price, at once amazing tools opening countless doors, some great and some not.
With respect to illustration and graphic design, I’m not without regrets. Were an aspiring young illustrator ask for advice, I’d remind them that time waits for no one. While you want to avoid selling your soul to the devil, you also need to be practical about things like retirement, health care, a mortgage, children, etc. I encourage taking risks while young but note what your elders have to content with. Illustration and graphic design can be nice ways to earn a living but as with anything else, talent and hard work aren’t enough, luck and timing are factors and long term planning is crucial. The days of Norman Rockwell, when jobs were plentiful and the world beat a path to an illustrator’s door, were already waning by the time Mark English and Bob Peak were in vogue. The writing was on the wall for long sustained careers of that type. Except for a rare few, freelancers have to supplement their careers outside illustration, even beyond teaching or anonymous generic work.
I will always love looking at great illustration and design. I’m constantly amazed and entertained by old and new talent, Doug Fraser and Aaron Horkey are wonderful. As long as I’m entertained and inspired by talents such as these, I’m happy and thankful to have a set of eyes.

Been trying my heart out to find more work of illustrator Leo Pando. His was one of the first illustrators in the late 70's that I really liked a lot. Here is all I found of his worx by doing the usual Google Search! I once had a link to where he was teaching but have lost that.
I've also found a few small illustrations that are credited as his @ Colby College .
ANYONE out there got any info on his whereabouts or samples of his worx?

I always like to blog the Sensual Works of Mike Salisbury. His eye can capture the the subtleties that most of us would miss by blinking. I snap a picture and it always looks like something out of a cheap rag. Even a blurred photo of Mike's is strong and captivating.
